Strawberry red and white mixed seed by Mr. Fothergill’s. Fantastically sweet berries. An exceptional mixture of red and white, amazingly sweet alpine strawberries. Generally fruiting in the first year, they are a must have for patio containers. With generous crops and the added benefit of birds not recognising the ripe white strawberries.
Sow and grow: Sow indoors, January-March. A warm kitchen windowsill is all you need for starting these seeds. Sow thinly on the surface of a small tray or pot of pre-watered compost. Place in a warm, light position. A temperature of 20 degree C (68 degree F) is ideal. Keep moist. Seedlings usually appear in 14-21 days. Transplant to individual pots when 10 cm (4-inch) tall. Grow on in cooler, but not cold conditions. Gradually accustom plants to outside conditions (avoid frosts), before planting out, May-June, 25 cm (10-inch) apart, into warm, well-drained soil, or individual containers, when frosts are over. Harvest: August-October.
Hints and tips: The size of the small fruit is more than made up for by their delicious flavour. A mulch in summer will help keep plants moist and the berries off the ground. Plants will fruit for several years.
